I was appalled to read the editorial regarding Jill Richardson’s attempt to introduce chickens into her neighborhood (”Home, home on the ranch,” Dec. 19). The attitude of the editor is just an example of what is wrong with this country. … Madison, Wis., Portland, Ore., and even New York City are now chicken-friendly. Why not here? Tales from the trail.: HAPPY 2010!

Neighborhood trailhead. Skinning up the Tilly Jane. The burn is about 18 months old now. The weather got windy and nasty once out of the trees, but it didn’t stop us. The Cooper Spur stone shelter at about 7000 feet. … And now we are back in Portland and almost back to reality! I am excited to start riding my bike, continue to play in the snow (if we get any) and cheer my fellow cx’ers on from afar. Happy 2010 everyone and thanks for continuing to share in my adventures …

Education Notes Online: When has a governmental agency before

There are 32 Community Education Councils (CEC’s) in New York City, each aligned with a school district overseeing a neighborhood’s public elementary and middle schools. According to the Department of Education’s web site, the CEC’s ” responsibilities include: approving ….Portland Public Schools wants every high school student to have access to band, choir, career pathways and at least 10 college credit courses. Those opportunities don’t exist for all students today. …
